Dumbara is located in the Ratnapura district and has a long history of mining activities. It is considered to be where the first commercial operating mine in Sri Lanka, first opened 1840.
Dumbara comprises four granted licences and one application, covering a total area of 58km2. The old Dumbara mine, which lies just outside Margosa’s licence, was the earliest recorded graphite mine in the country, starting in the 1850s. Margosa holds ground north and south of the Dumbara mine.
A 1975 survey by the Sri Lankan Geological Survey and Mines Bureau located 327 historical graphite mine workings at 45 locations within these project licences. Given the very rugged topography in the area Dumbara is an ideal candidate for AEM and the project will be included in Margosa’s 2017 survey of Tier 1 projects.
